Dynamic educator with a proven track record of success.

Thando Hyman is a highly qualified educator with over 15 years of teaching and administrative experience in the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) serving as a Principal, Vice-Principal, classroom Teacher, Instructional Leader and Literacy Convener. She has served as a Principal for 22 different TDSB schools in Toronto and instilled the development and educational strategies to increase the literacy and numeracy achievements of students.

Thando has served as a past co-chair of the TDSB’s African Heritage Educators Network to work with the TDSB in developing the Black Cultural Heritage Program serving the role as equity consultant. This has led to Thando becoming the founding Principal of Africentric Alternative School in Toronto.

Outside of her educational field, Thando has a widespread background in community work and with passionately promoting equity and access. In the early 1990’s she has coauthored Towards a New Beginning which addresses the marginalisation of African Canadians in society. Thando is also an active volunteer where she has chaired the African Heritage Educators Network (AHEN) ,the Black Coalition for AIDS Prevention (Black CAP), founding board member of the African Canadian Legal Aid Clinic and councillor of TVO Ontario. Her community involvement also includes being a radio broadcaster of the AWAF Roundtable on 89.5 CIUT FM.
